Strangely enough this just sounds extremely contemporary and of the moment, or at least of the mid 2000’s moment when the post-punk revival thing was in full swing and a whole plethora of bands were trying to revive a genre that had never ‘really’ died. Equally strangely, I cannot recall any of them breaking free from the ultimate ‘coolness’ of citing the usual Postcard Records bands, Gang of Four or The Cure as their influences to say ‘you know what we want to sound just like Dirk Wears White Sox era Adam and The Ants’. But listen to this intently on repeat a few times and take in the whole yelped delivery and fuzzed up angular guitar work and you will soon realise that you might well be listening to bands such as The Futureheads or a more lyrically puerile and less self absorbed version of Bloc Party…it is actually a bit uncanny really. SQ on this version is Wow. Im playing on a Technics SL 1500C with an Ortofon Blue, so nothing spectacular but nevertheless it sounds great and Im playing it now with the sound cranked. A bit of IGN but what the Hell ? So ok, they might have been a bit ahead of their time, but is it actually any good? Well, you have to be careful here. Some old post-punkers like me can have a tendency to get a bit carried away with their admiration of this album primarily because, like me, they tend to listen to it years after dismissing the Ants ‘kwa diddly kwa kwa’ work that proceeded this album (after the majority of the band had left to go and get comfy with the devil and become Malcolm McLaren’s Bow Wow Wow) and are amazed that they were actually a credible post-punk / new wave unit before the days when a white piece of masking tape was seen as cool if attached horizontally across the bridge of a ones nose.
