An emotionally rich, character-driven story with a brilliant cast, it inspires hope and promises new beginnings.Celine and her exhusband Mike are now officially divorced except Celine keeps wondering if she made a mistake letting Mike go. This book actually does end on a hopeful note for the characters, but as a reader I found it hard to envision that hope translating into a happy future together. I expected an entirely different ending than the one I got and I finished the last few pages with tears in my eyes. Whilst it didn’t always make the reading easy, or that enjoyable, these serious issues were dealt with sensitively and it made the book feel more authentic and emotional.

It takes tragic circumstances for Fin to come back into Eleanor's life, but everything has changed since the last time they met. The evolution of their relationship seemed formulaic, however what saved this book for me was the family dynamics.Handsome and stylish Victor is reunited by chance with David, his first love, fifteen years after the last time they saw each other. I felt that Celine was unsure of the direction of her love life, unsure of whether the divorce was the right wait to go and unsure of revisiting the relationship with her first love. A trained yoga and spin teacher, Emily is completely obsessed with dogs and has dreamt of being an author ever since she could hold a pen. It was far too slow paced for me and I would have liked more signs of Fin's feelings to Eleanor when they were younger.

I ended up skipping through a lot of the book as I just found it a bit boring and the main characters hardly interacted which I didn't like. So often, authors fall prey to an annoying, lazy tendency to vilify one love interest while sanctifying the other in love triangles, stacking the deck in the future "winner's" favor. In amongst the sweet flashbacks and the heart melting present day scenes, Houghton addresses losing a loved one, illness, alcoholism, abusive relationships amongst other things. Celine is a very intelligent woman--one who has begun her own business as a specialist in being a modern match-maker, one who reads people well but who can't seem to figure out her own feelings and hopes for the future. She throws herself into her matchmaking business whilst going through a divorce that’s so amicable her estranged husband has asked for help to meet someone new. Maybe that was what happened when you had your heart broken… it grew back harder and more protected than before. While I enjoyed the fairly predictable path taken by this story, I was wrenched out of the story every time someone smirked (smirk or smirked appears 24 times in the narrative).
