Description

The preface notes that the case histories are examples of specific serial killer types, motivations, nationalities, and other characteristics, because the more than 1,500 serial killers on record renders comprehensive coverage of every case unfeasible. However, for those of you that know me well, you know my obsession with serial killers (Not to be one, just to learn about their psyche). The book is quite detailed, and I liked the fact that there was information in the book on serial killers from the 1800's and earlier (Erzsebet Bathory born in 1560). He is also the author of Nevermore and The Hum Bug, the acclaimed historical novels featuring Edgar Allan Poe. American Reference Books Annual The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers, Second Edition provides accurate, unglamorized information on hundreds of serial murder cases-from early history to the present.

H. Holmes and Richard Chase were not included (especially with the inclusion of some other lesser known murderers with very short entries), but otherwise a very informative edition that also includes entries on different types of serial murder as well as definitions of various terms and FBI agents that are referenced throughout. Men kill for more diverse reasons, but seems like sexuality and childhood trauma (again, sex wise trauma too) plays a big role. The Big Book of Serial Killers is an easy-to-follow collection of information on the world's most heinous murderers. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this murder-opedia is that it feels like it has a British focus, so there is more detail on European and English murderers, like Fred West, who was apprehended and charged in 1994, apparently when this text was authored.New and updated entries include: ""Axe Man of New Orleans""; BTK Strangler; Jack the Ripper; Cuidad Juarez, Mexico; John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, the Sniper Killers; Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer; and Harold Frederick Shipman.
